Rocky Balboa in the Boxing Hall of Fame: When Fiction Becomes Reality

On 12th June 2011, Sylvester Stallone entered the annuls of the International Boxing Hall of Fame as the famous boxer Rocky Balboa: the movie star ‘works on the merging of bourgeois and working-class imagination’ (Marshall 1997, p. 15), taking a new dimension to the eternal debate about art imitating life.
This article analyses how Stallone built the myth of Rocky Balboa, links actor and character (Morin 1960; Podheiser 2010; Gebauer and Wulf 1995), fact and fiction (Turner 2004; Rojek 2001), in order to understand why a fictional boxer has come to be seen as ‘real’ and eventually ‘judged’.
